ESPEDALEN CHURCH
At the idyllic Verksodden, by the Espedal lake, the tower of Espedalen mountain church can be seen protruding above the pine tops.
Espedalen church was initiated the summer of 1974. The church is tall and beautiful. The architect clearly had the old stave churches in mind, but the form is still unique and noble. The church has seating for as many as 100 people.
The interior of the church is light and harmonious. The triangular motif (The triangular represents the tri unity and at the same time gods eye) can be seen everywhere, both in the room and the simple details. The choir in the church is something special. The back wall can be covered if needed. Window slits gives a view of the forest and the Espedal water. A more beautiful altar no-one could want.
The church yard itself has been in use since the early 1800 century and the inhabitants of Espedalen is to this day laid to rest at Gravholmen.
GRAVHOLMEN
Gravholmen is said to be of as one of Norway’s most unique cemeteries. Here rules Mother Nature. On the island is a memorial stone with the names of all those who were placed to rest here from old times. At the end of the 1800-century a nickel mining company ran a large industry at Verksodden in Espedalen, but the times were harsh and many a soul died young.
